2009 Call for Proposals/Call for Participation

Southeast Regional Legal Writing Conference September 11 and 12, 2009 and ALWD Scholars’ Forum/Workshop September 13, 2009

Hosted by Stetson University College of Law Gulfport, Florida
Deadlines: Conference Proposals: April 3, 2009
Scholars’ Forum/Workshop Participation: May 1, 2009

Stetson University College of Law is pleased to announce that it will host on its Gulfport, Florida campus the 2009 Southeast Regional Legal Writing Conference on September 11 and 12, 2009, along with an ALWD Scholars’ Forum/Workshop on September 13, 2009.

The conference theme, “Remixing the Classics,” honors the classical legal writing concepts of the last twenty-five years and recognizes the need to “remix” those traditional ideas to meet the needs of new students, to adapt to new faculty expectations, and to move the discipline forward. We hope everyone will consider submitting a proposal.

We are even more pleased to announce that the plenary speaker for the Conference will be Mary Beth Beazley, Associate Professor of Law at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in Columbus, Ohio. Professor Beazley has been teaching legal research and writing for more than twenty years and is author of the highly regarded book, A Practical Guide to Appellate Advocacy, now it its second edition. She is President–Elect of the Association of Legal Writing Directors, Chair of the ABA Communication Skills Committee, former President of the Legal Writing Institute, 2005 recipient of the Thomas F. Blackwell Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Legal Writing, and 2008 recipient of the Burton Award for Outstanding Contributions in Legal Writing Education.

Finally, we are excited to be hosting an ALWD Scholars Forum/Workshop at the end of the Conference. Up to sixteen participants will present their scholarship ideas, works-in-progress, or further developed drafts of legal writing articles to other legal writing faculty. The Scholars Forum/Workshop represents a special opportunity to work on legal writing scholarship and to get feedback from peers on scholarly projects.

The conference webpage will be available soon, and registration will open on March 23, 2009. The Call for Conference Proposals and the Call for Participation for the ALWD Scholars Forum/Workshop follow below.

CALL FOR ALWD SCHOLARS/WORKSHOP

We invite up to sixteen individuals to participate in either a Scholars’ Workshop or Scholars’ Forum.

Scholars Forum

The Scholars’ Forum will give legal writing scholars the chance to present their scholarship ideas, works-in-progress, or further developed drafts of legal writing articles to a group of other legal writing faculty. In this setting, participants will have an opportunity to practice presenting and addressing questions about a scholarly paper. Each participant will have twenty minutes to present the scholarship, followed by a twenty-minute question and answer session. The Scholars’ Forum is a great opportunity for legal writing scholars to share their ideas with others in legal writing and receive input and feedback from their peers on scholarship projects.

Scholars Workshop

The Scholars’ Workshop, which requires that participants have a paper in draft, gives participants an opportunity to receive feedback from peers on their written works in progress. Authors are assigned to a group of four, and all group members receive each other's papers in advance. Authors can ask for specific types of input from the small group on the paper. At the Workshop, the group will meet to discuss the papers. To participate in the Workshop, a draft of the paper must be ready to be shared by August 15, 2009.

Both the Scholars’ Forum and Scholars’ Workshop will take place on Sunday, September 13, 2009, the day after the Southeast Regional Legal Writing Conference. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. The Forum and Workshop are available on a first-come, first-served basis to individuals who otherwise meet the requirements for participation and are limited to 16 participants. The designation of participants to the Forum or Workshop will depend on interest.
To participate, please email Ann Piccard, Program Co-Chair, at Piccard@law.stetson.edu.

The deadline for responding is May 1, 2009. Please include the following information in your e-mail:

  1. Contact information, including name, school, and phone number.
  2. The topic of your scholarly legal writing project. (Note: the topic must be on legal writing, broadly defined, and the goal must be to ultimately write an article that will be placed in a law review, book, or similar scholarly outlet.)
  3. Whether you wish to participate in the Forum or Workshop or if you have no preference. Please note that Workshop participation requires a written draft be available by August 15, 2009.
