Every odd year, ALWD hosts a conference for the legal writing community to come together to learn about our field and to present our ideas and develop our skills as teachers, scholars, and leaders. The conference provides both formal and informal opportunities for relationship building with legal writing colleagues from across the country.

The Leadership Academy, which was conceived of in 2018, will provide an opportunity for legal writing faculty to develop their leadership skills in a small-group setting. Among other things, the Leadership Academy will focus on building cultural competency and other skills or practices important for developing well-rounded and inclusive leaders.

In addition to the Biennial Conference and the Leadership Academy, ALWD sponsors annual Innovative Teaching Workshops as well as Scholars Forums or Workshops in connection with national and regional writing conferences. Additionally, ALWD funds a Visiting Scholar program, which allows legal writing professionals to visit and share their scholarship with law schools and legal writing programs across the country.
