This session of the ALWD Virtual Front Porch series is geared towards legal writing directors or those with administrative responsibility of a program. The panel focused on how individuals can be their best own advocates. For a director, or someone with administrative responsibility, being one’s own best advocate must be balanced with advocacy for a program. Topics to be discussed include fostering leadership, gender dynamics relating to self-advocacy, the changing and challenging demands of a COVID environment, tensions between individual career and personal goals and programmatic/institutional goals, salary and scholarship considerations, and fostering mental health in self, faculty, and students.

  • Shakira Pleasant, Assistant Professor of Law; Director, Legal Writing Resource Center, University of Illinois Chicago Law School
